Harry James Potter was born on July 31, 1980. He shares the same birthday as J. K. Rowling.
He almost died at fifteen months old, on October 31, 1981, when Lord Voldemort, a powerful dark wizard, cast the unforgivable curse Avada Kedavra on him. Before Harry, no one had ever survived such a spell. He was left with only a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead from the attack. It was the powerful love of his mother, Lily, who sacrificed herself for him, that caused this "miracle." However, the details of this unexpected event are only revealed to the reader in the seventh novel. One thing is certain: Lily's love was something Voldemort was unable to foresee, much less understand. This "miraculous" protection comes from very ancient magic linked to love and can remain active until Harry comes of age, provided that someone of his blood (in other words, his Aunt Petunia) welcomes him into their home. The dark wizard's spell backfired on him and he was reduced to a bodiless being, even weaker than a ghost but nevertheless still capable of using his power of possession. Harry briefly remained alone in his crib, wounded on his forehead, amidst his almost entirely destroyed house, with the ruins covering the bodies of his father and mother. Very soon, however, Rubeus Hagrid came to rescue him and went to meet Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall with Sirius Black's flying motorcycle, Harry's godfather, so that he would not be found by the Death Eaters.
Harry was placed at 4 Privet Drive with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys — Muggles (moldus in French), who thus, albeit reluctantly, responded to Albus Dumbledore's request. He lived with them until he started Hogwarts, and then only returned there every summer, until his definitive departure, in the summer of his 17th birthday. Dumbledore, who was aware of the protective magic linked to blood, sent a letter to his aunt Petunia Dursley, née Evans, Lily Evans Potter's sister, explaining what had happened to the Potters. However, Petunia, disgusted by magic, her "horrible monster of a sister" and her "horrible husband," hid the truth about her parents' death and his nature as a wizard from her nephew. The Dursleys made his life difficult, making him perform many thankless tasks, while their son Dudley, a big, chubby boy spoiled by his parents, made Harry his punching bag, enjoying chasing him with his friends (a game they called Harry hunting) and hitting him, the rare times he managed to catch him. Harry also suffered much abuse from his uncle and aunt: until the end of his tenth year, he slept in a cupboard under the stairs, had to cook for them (but very rarely ate his fill) and could only wear Dudley's old clothes. But above all, he grew up from fifteen months to eleven years old without parental love. The Dursleys had to move during the events of the seventh novel so that Voldemort could not track them.
(*) A bobblehead figure, sometimes translated as "wobbly-headed figure", is a type of collectible toy, whose head is often oversized compared to its body. Instead of a solid joint with the rest of the body, it is connected by a spring or hook so that the head wobbles when touched, hence the name.
