He has black hair, long and tangled, and a bushy beard that hides almost his entire face. He has phenomenal strength. In the original version, Hagrid has a rather particular accent made of elision and distortion. Hagrid is very sensitive and sentimental by nature and he cries easily. Hagrid most of the time wears a long beaver or bearskin coat or a large mole hair overcoat full of pockets. For "special occasions", he often wears a brown suit with an ugly yellow tie.

Hagrid has a preference for the most dangerous magical creatures possible, notably a dragon that he gave birth to at home and which he called Norbert, a three-headed dog which guarded the philosopher's stone named Fluffy, an Acromantula which he named Aragog , the hippogriff Buck and some firecracker Scroutts. He is able to see Thestrals. In fact, he has little interest in docile magical creatures, although he does have a cowardly hound named Hardfang as a pet.

Hagrid lives in a small wooden house built to his size, consisting of a single room and located on the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
